Ovarian
cysts are collections of fluid within the ovary. While some form as part
of the normal process of menstruation, others can cause pain, bloating, irregular
periods, and rarely infertility.
Laparoscopic cystectomy involves the complete removal of the cyst, including
the wall (or lining) of the cyst. Procedures that involve simple draining or
puncturing do not work, and the cyst may come back in a matter of days. We adhere
strictly to this principle.
In the presence of benign (non-cancerous) cysts, the ovary can and should be
preserved, especially in patients planning to conceive.
Laparoscopy, in trained hands, affords the best way to deal with cysts. The ideal
treatment is precise dissection, using sterile bags to prevent spillage of the
contents of the cysts, which could contaminate the abdomen. This technique can
be performed in the majority of patients suffering from this condition.
